NEW PALMER/PLETSCH PATTERN DESIGNER FOR BUTTERICK PATTERNS

BY PATI PALMER

After designing and writing the guidesheets for 295 McCall’s patterns, two Vogue, and 33 Butterick for a total of 330 patterns, I have decided to pass the baton to Tammie Pontsler for Palmer/Pletsch Patterns for Butterick.

I appreciate all of you who have trusted us to be a resource for you and given us feedback, pattern ideas, and who have appeared in our books and blogs through the years and have attended our hands-on workshops. I hope you will be  supportive of Tammie’s new journey with Butterick.

Happy Sewing!

Pati Palmer

I asked Tammie how she feels about her first ever pattern for the first ever commercial pattern company still operating today.

Tammie Pontsler

“I am very honored to be taking the reins to design the Palmer/Pletsch line of patterns for Butterick. Joining Pati Palmer and Melissa Watson in creating designs that have empowered sewers to create garments that fit is my dream come true. I am grateful to Pati and Melissa for this opportunity and look forward to providing designs you are excited to fit, sew and wear!”

Meet Tammie Pontsler, new designer for Butterick Palmer/Pletsch patterns

Tammie Pontsler in her sewing studio

Because I want the Butterick Palmer/Pletsch patterns to keep helping current and future sewists with fit and sewing tips, I decided to step down so someone else could step up. I met Tammie Pontsler at our Sewing Vacation Workshop in Portland, OR about 10 years ago.  She was teaching for San Diego College of Continuing Education. During the pandemic she asked Helen Bartley and me to do online fit classes for their instructors. I got to know her and admired all that she did. After working with me for a year, she has agreed to take over my Butterick Palmer/Pletsch patterns. I agreed to be her mentor and have loved working with her side by side. She’s already proven her capabilities by working with me on two of my recent designs, even writing the guidesheets! Butterick is also very welcoming seeing her fresh new pattern ideas.

She is now located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has a sewing and teaching studio in her home. Not only will she be designing new Butterick Palmer/Pletsch patterns, but she is also teaching our online classes. She has had a lot of practice from her days of college teaching.

Tammie teaches 1 1/2-hour webinars, 3-hour interactive hands-on classes, and 2-day workshops. Tammie’s students have loved her teaching style.

Get to know Tammie! Attend one of her seminars or workshops.

I learned to sew by reading the sewing books by Patti. It is bittersweet to learn she is retiring. But I am happy to know the sewing patterns will continue. Thank you for helping become a better sewist.

Judith, It was so nice to read your comment. Music to my ears for the years spent teaching and writing. Thank you. Pati Palmer

I am sad that Patti is retiring but at the same time happy for her. I have followed her on my sewing journey after a seminar she gave in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada over twenty years ago that was a game changer with the introduction of sergers for home sewers. Thank you Pati for all your hard work in making our sewing world so much better. Enjoy your retirement. I think things are in good hands with Melissa and Tammie.

Judy, Thank you so much. I loved teaching around Canada back in the day. The serger topic was one of my favorites until I got the fit bug!! Pati Palmer

Pati, I have most of your Fit Books and CD’s, gone to two of your fit workshops in Oregon one with you and the other with both you and Marta, attended one Jeans and one Blazer workshop in Seattle with Nancy Seifert. I Love Love Love your method of fitting patterns to actually fit! Happy for you in your retirement, but even happier that Palmer/Pletsch fit training and patterns are continuing.

    Dear Pati,

Nancy Zieman taught me how to sew, and you and Marta taught me how to fit. You saved my sewing life! I had stopped sewing because of post-menopause fit problems. After taking classes from you and Marta at a sewing expo in Wisconsin over 15 years ago, I signed up for the one week Fit Workshop in Portland. I’ve been sewing clothes that fit ever since. Your method made perfect sense to me from the first.

Enjoy retirement! Thank you so much,

    Carol Lee Hopkins
